Ghost Herder:

The Journal of the Friends of the Little Bighorn Battlefield

"You have done a magnificent job with a stellar list of authors. I think you may have set a standard you cannot meet in the future. Hearty congratulations on this issue."   Robert Utley

The purpose of “Ghost Herder” is to support the management goals and objectives of Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument. Think of it as a living biography of the battlefield. Historian Jim Donovan describes it as one of the best edited journals he has read in years.

The contributors to “Ghost Herder” are easily recognized as some of the best historians and writers of the American West:

Friends board member and senior editor of “Ghost Herder”, Neil Mangum, presents an extensive and detailed look at the transformation of Last Stand Hill since 1876. We include a magnificent aerial photograph of Last Stand Hill never published before.

Jerry Greene, Plains Indian historian and Friends member, chronicles the evolution of Indian testimony from rejection to acceptance.

Friends member, Mike Donahue, shares personal stories – some uproariously funny -- from his two decades as a seasonal ranger at Custer Battlefield. Included is a riveting account of the Russell Means demonstration on Last Stand Hill June 25, 1988. Mike allowed us to publish, for the first time, photos from that day.

Kingsley Bray studies one aspect of the battle: who killed Charley Reynolds and Bloody Knife? Bray found new evidence – never published – that will make one consider his theory seriously.

Our final article is by Dr. Douglas Scott. Here are the stories of the early archeologists, both professional and amateur, who surveyed the battlefield for battle relics. This is a preview, somewhat, of our future book “Uncovering History” to be published in 2013. In “Uncovering History”, Scott tells the complete story of every archeological study conducted at LBH. Update: You can now also order "Uncovering History"
